A body at 37°C radiates as a near-blackbody. Wien's displacement law puts the peak of that emission at 9.4 µm. This is not a claim about the formula — it is a property of any object at body temperature.
Silica — SiO₂
The Si–O asymmetric stretch produces a Reststrahlen band near 9 µm, with a second phonon band near 21 µm. Silica's strongest infrared feature sits directly on the body's emission peak.
Titanium dioxide — TiO₂
Rutile's four infrared-active lattice phonon modes fall between roughly 20 and 58 µm; particulate TiO₂ adds surface phonon modes near 12–15 µm. TiO₂ extends coverage across the long-wavelength tail, where silica alone is thin.
The target
Liquid water absorbs at the O–H stretch near 3 µm, the H–O–H bend near 6.1 µm, and across the broad libration band beyond 12 µm. Tissue is roughly 70% water by mass, and absorption stays high across the entire emission range.
Band positions are published optical constants for the pure materials, not measurements of the finished product. The chart shows spectral overlap — where emitted energy and absorbing tissue meet — not a clinical outcome. Red and near-infrared photobiomodulation at 600–900 nm targets cytochrome c oxidase and lies well outside this range; it is a separate mechanism.
